“You received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’” — Romans 8:15

“Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will.” — Mark 14:36

Reflection

When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, His words must have stunned the disciples who later remembered them. He called the Almighty Creator, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — “Abba.” In Aramaic, that’s not a formal word. It’s the sound of a child running across the room and climbing into their father’s lap. The closest word in English is “Papa.”

Even more stunning: Jesus didn’t keep this intimacy to Himself. Through His death and resurrection, we are adopted into God’s family. Paul tells us that the Spirit Himself prompts our hearts to cry out the same name: “Papa!” It is not just Jesus’ privilege, but ours as His brothers and sisters (Romans 8:29).

call God “Papa” is to admit that we are children. Children don’t come to their fathers with credentials or polished speeches. They come messy, sometimes afraid, sometimes joyful, but always honest. They come because they know they belong.

In the ancient Roman world, adoption was binding and permanent. An adopted child could never be disowned — their inheritance was secure. When Paul says we are adopted, he is telling us that our place in God’s family is fixed, permanent, sealed. No failure, no sin, no weakness can undo it. That’s why we can whisper with trembling lips or shout with joy: “Papa, I’m Yours.”

Reflection Question

– Where in your life do you find it hardest to believe God sees you as His beloved child?
– Try praying today using the word “Papa.” How does it change the way you feel when you speak to Him?

Closing Prayer

Papa, thank You for adopting me into Your family through Jesus. Thank You that Your Spirit teaches my heart to cry out to You, not in fear but in love. Help me rest in Your embrace today. Teach me to trust You with the simplicity of a child, knowing that nothing can separate me from Your love. Amen.
